As we step into summer, it’s the perfect time to think about how you can enhance your business operations. Whether you’re launching a new venture or making upgrades to your current setup, one small but powerful upgrade to consider is choosing the right ice machine!

At Hoshizaki America, we understand how important ice is for your business. That’s why we’re known for making high-quality, reliable ice machines that work for a variety of industries, like foodservice, hospitality, convenience stores, healthcare, and education.

In this blog, we’ll help you figure out how to choose the best ice machine for your needs. Whether you’re opening a new business or upgrading your current equipment, we’ve got you covered. Let’s get started!

Why the Right Ice Machine Matters

Choosing the right ice machine is more important than you might think. Ice isn’t just about keeping drinks cold. It plays a big role in how customers see your business, how smooth your operations run, and how much money you save in the long run.

A reliable machine ensures you always have clean, fresh ice, which keeps customers happy and improves their experience. It also helps your business run smoothly by making the right amount of ice when you need it, reducing downtime and avoiding disruptions. Plus, efficient machines save money on electricity and water bills, especially if they’re ENERGY STAR® certified.

How Much Ice Do You Need?

When choosing an ice machine, it’s important to think about how much ice your business uses daily. Having the right size ice machine ensures you never run out, even when demand is high.

Take a look at this handy graphic to help you figure out your ice needs:

You can calculate the size of the ice machine you need using this formula:
Lbs. of ice used x Number of customers served = Size of ice maker you need.

Remember to think about peak demand times, like weekends or holidays, when your ice needs might be higher than usual.

Matching Ice Types to Business Needs

Ice isn’t one-size-fits-all. Different businesses need different types of ice to suit their customers and operations. Hoshizaki offers 8 types of ice to meet these needs: KMEdgeTM Crescent Cube, Sphere Ice, Cubelet Ice, Soft Cubelet Ice, 1by1 Cube, 2by2 Cube, Flaked Ice, and lastly Top Hat Cube. Each type has unique features that make it perfect for specific uses. For example, Crescent Cubes are crystal clear and melt slowly, making them great for drinks in restaurants and hospitality settings. Cubelet Ice, which is small and chewable, is ideal for healthcare, schools, and convenience stores. Flaked Ice works well for displays in healthcare or foodservice, while specialty ice, like Sphere or Square Cubes, is perfect for upscale cocktails or premium dining.

Here’s how different industries use Hoshizaki ice:

When choosing an ice machine, look for key features that make it a great investment. Energy efficiency is important to save money and help the environment. Hoshizaki’s ENERGY STAR® certified models are a great choice. Durability matters too, as a strong machine lasts longer and needs fewer repairs. Think about the size and capacity to make sure the machine fits your space and can make enough ice for your needs. You should also check if the ice maker has a good drainage system to avoid water problems. It’s important to place it in the right location, like near a water line and where it has enough space to work properly. Sanitation features are also a must to keep the ice clean and safe, which is especially important for customers’ health.

Why Choose Hoshizaki America?

At Hoshizaki, we take pride in delivering high-quality ice machines designed for reliability and performance. We also focus on creating energy-efficient products that support sustainability while saving you money. Our nationwide support and service network ensures you always have the help you need to keep your business running smoothly.

What is the NRA Show?

Every year, the National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show brings together the best and brightest in the foodservice industry—and 2025 was no exception. Held in Chicago at McCormick Place, this massive event is one of the most influential trade shows in the hospitality world, known for spotlighting the latest foodservice trends, equipment innovations, and emerging technologies. The NRA Show is a global stage where the entire foodservice ecosystem comes together under one roof. The show draws a wide range of industry professionals, from restaurant owners and chefs to equipment manufacturers, food and beverage brands, tech providers, and global decision-makers. It’s more than just a trade show—it’s where the latest trends, innovations, and technologies are introduced, and where brands connect, collaborate, and showcase what’s next. For companies like Hoshizaki America, it’s a key opportunity to launch new products, strengthen partnerships, and stay at the forefront of foodservice.

Hoshizaki Alliance at NRA

At this year’s NRA Show, we once again joined forces with long-time partners Fogel, Jackson WWS, Lancer Worldwide and Macom at the Hoshizaki Alliance Booth – 6207 in the South Hall. Each brand brings its own expertise and innovation to the table, allowing us to meet a broad range of foodservice needs.

Hoshizaki America’s Presence at the NRA Show

This year, we had a strong dual presence at the NRA Show—Booth 6207 in the South Hall as part of Hoshizaki Alliance, and a dedicated space at Booth 13837 in the Lakeside Beverage Room.

One of the highlights was our live bartender demos featuring the incredibly talented Chris Leavitt—better known to his 410k+ Instagram followers as @notjustabartender. Chris showcased how Hoshizaki’s specialty ice, including our signature 2by2 cubes, spheres, and other ice types, can transform any bar program. His engaging demos not only attracted crowds but also sparked exciting conversations around craft cocktails and beverage presentation.

We were also proud to be an official Sustainability Partner of the NRA Show for the first time. In support of the Show’s sustainability initiative, we provided water and ice dispensers across the show floor to help attendees stay refreshed while reducing single-use plastic. Our #HydrateWithHoshizaki refill stations were prominently placed near the main stages in each hall and at our booth—marking a meaningful step forward in sustainable hospitality.

As always, booth traffic was strong with a constant flow of industry professionals, media representatives, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers stopping by. We had valuable conversations about the future of foodservice, current operator challenges, and how our reliable, energy-efficient solutions continue to deliver performance where it matters most.

Hoshizaki America, Inc., a leading manufacturer of commercial ice and refrigeration equipment, has won a significant legal battle against Blue Air FSE LLC and Bluenix Co., Ltd. American diners do their homework before going out to eat at a restaurant. In fact, in a recent survey conducted by US Foods, 83% of people review the menu ahead of time, and half of them (50%) already know what they’re going to order before even stepping foot inside!

With so much thought put into dining choices, it’s clear that today’s customers want more than just good food—they want meals that fit their needs, whether that’s a specific diet, health-conscious options, or quick service. And here’s the challenge: if restaurants and foodservice businesses don’t keep up, they risk falling behind.

In this blog, we’ll dive into how you can adapt your kitchen and service to meet these evolving needs. From accommodating food allergies to embracing convenience-focused trends, we’ve got practical tips to help you stay ahead in the game.

Personalized Experiences
Customization is top priority. During the COVID-19 pandemic, an Innova Market Survey showed that 64% of global consumers want more personalized nutrition and products that fit their lifestyles. This is why customizable menus – like build-your-own bowls, pizzas, or salads are so popular.

Flexibility is also important. Diners expect options to swap ingredients, adjust portion sizes, or cater to specific dietary needs or cultural preferences. By showing customers that their unique choices matter, you’re not just serving food, you’re building loyalty.

Health-Conscious Dining
Eating out is no longer just about indulgence; it’s about balance. Strategic Marketing Research reports that 67% of Americans believe eating plant-based foods is healthier than eating animal-based foods, and 42% plan to include more plant-based meals in their diets.

This growing focus on health means diners are looking for clean-label menus, simple ingredient lists, and calorie counts. Healthier cooking methods, like grilling or steaming, can also make your offerings more appealing to wellness-focused customers.

Convenience-Focused Trends
Convenience is king. According to US Foods, even well after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, 57% of Americans prefer ordering takeout or delivery over dining in. Grab-and-go options, seamless app-based ordering, and services like curbside pickup are great ways to meet this demand. By making it easy for customers to get the food they want, when they want it, you’ll keep them coming back for more.

Adapting Your Kitchen and Menu
Once you understand what diners want, the next step is adapting your kitchen and menu to deliver on those expectations.

Upgrading Kitchen Equipment and Layout
Upgrading your kitchen equipment and layout is essential to handle the growing demand for diverse meal options efficiently. Investing in flexible kitchen setups allows you to easily switch between preparing plant-based, allergen-free, or specialty dishes. High-quality tools like slicers, blenders, and other prep equipment help maintain speed and consistency while ensuring dishes meet customer expectations. Additionally, dedicating space for allergen-free or specialty ingredients helps keep everything organized and safe from cross-contamination, streamlining your operations while maintaining food safety.

Leveraging Technology
Leveraging technology allows you to work smarter and stay ahead of new trends. Tools that monitor ingredient usage help you spot trends and ensure you’re always stocked with what customers want. Using apps or systems to collect real-time customer feedback and preferences enables you to fine-tune your menu and service, ensuring you meet their evolving needs. For more insights, read our previous blog on Technology in the Foodservice Industry to learn how tech can transform your operations.

Enhancing Customer Service
Modern diners expect service that’s knowledgeable, seamless, and transparent. To meet these expectations:

Staying Ahead of Trends
To stay competitive, it’s important to keep up with changing dining trends. Keep an eye on industry reports and listen to customer feedback to spot new diets and preferences. You can try out new menu items or offer limited-time specials to see what people like without making a big commitment.

Working with experts like nutritionists or allergists can help you make sure your menu meets different dietary needs. Getting involved with local communities can also give you an idea of what people in your area prefer.

Attending foodservice trade shows and events is another great way to stay updated. These events show new products, tools, and ideas that can help your business keep up with what customers want. Being proactive helps you keep your menu fresh and exciting.

As dining habits change, restaurants and foodservice businesses need to adapt. By offering personalized, healthy, and convenient options, you can meet the needs of today’s diners. Improving your kitchen, service, and marketing while staying ahead of trends will help you create an experience that customers love. With these strategies, you’ll stay competitive and thrive in an ever-changing market.

4. Autumn Bourbon Sour

Ingredients:

Instructions:

Prepare this in advance:

Combine 1/2 cup honey and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Add a cinnamon stick, a few cloves, and a pinch of nutmeg. Heat gently until the honey is dissolved, then remove from heat and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain and cool before storing in a container.

Make the drink:

In a cocktail shaker, combine bourbon, fresh lemon juice, and 3/4 oz spiced honey syrup.

Fill the shaker with Hoshizaki KMEdge™ crescent ice and shake well for about 15 seconds to chill the ingredients.

Place Hoshizaki 1by1 ice cubes in an old fashioned glass. Strain the cocktail mixture into the glass, pouring it over the ice.

Slowly pour the red wine over the back of a spoon just above the cocktail. This will allow the wine to float on top, creating a layered dark red color.

Add a twisted lemon peel or skip the garnish for a cleaner look that focuses on the drink’s gradient.

Optional variations:

You can substitute the bourbon with rye whiskey for a spicier touch.

The red wine can be a deep, bold variety like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot to enhance the fall flavors.

You’ve likely spotted the bright ENERGY STAR label on various appliances, like dishwashers and refrigerators, but do you know what it really means? It’s a sign that these machines are designed to save energy, which is great for both your wallet and the planet! If you use ENERGY STAR appliances, you could be cutting down on your electricity bills without even realizing it.

In the foodservice industry, energy efficiency is extremely important. Restaurants and cafeterias rely on a lot of equipment, and using less energy can help you save a significant amount of money. Have you ever wondered how energy-efficient your kitchen equipment is in keeping meals hot and fresh? By choosing ENERGY STAR equipment, you not only reduce your business costs but also contribute to a healthier environment.

Now answering some common questions:

What does the ENERGY STAR label mean?
The ENERGY STAR label shows that a product meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). When you see this label on an appliance, it means the government has certified it meets certain energy efficiency standards. This can help save money on your utility bills!

How do ENERGY STAR appliances work?
ENERGY STAR appliances use special technology to reduce energy use without sacrificing performance. For example, they might have better insulation or more efficient motors. This allows them to perform the same tasks while consuming less electricity, benefiting both your budget and the environment.

Why should businesses consider using ENERGY STAR appliances?
Your business should think about using ENERGY STAR appliances because you can save money in the long run. These appliances are designed to use less energy, which can lower monthly utility bills. Plus, using energy-efficient products can help your business meet environmental goals and show customers that you care about sustainability!

How do products receive the ENERGY STAR certification?
To earn the ENERGY STAR label, your products must meet strict energy efficiency levels set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). There are over 75 types of products that can receive this label, including appliances, electronics, lighting, and food service equipment.

First, you must test your products in EPA-recognized laboratories to ensure they meet ENERGY STAR specifications. You must also demonstrate that your products save energy without sacrificing performance—like LED bulbs that need to be both energy-efficient and bright!

Next, an independent certification body reviews these test results to confirm the product meets the required standards. And later, after a product hits the market, some are selected for additional testing to ensure they still comply with ENERGY STAR requirements. This thorough process helps guarantee the integrity of energy savings claims.

Currently, there are about 70,000 different product models that can proudly display the ENERGY STAR certification!

Benefits of Using ENERGY STAR Equipment
Using ENERGY STAR appliances offers several benefits for both your business and the environment. First, it helps reduce energy consumption, leading to lower electricity bills and significant cost savings. Second, ENERGY STAR appliances are designed for maximum efficiency, which not only lowers operational costs but also reduces your business’s carbon footprint, promoting long-term sustainability. Additionally, these energy-efficient appliances often outperform standard models, offering superior results while using less energy. You can also take advantage of financial incentives and rebates available for ENERGY STAR purchases, making the initial investment even more attractive. Plus, choosing ENERGY STAR equipment signals to customers that your business is committed to sustainability, boosting your reputation and attracting eco-conscious consumers. For more information on how ENERGY STAR appliances can benefit your business and the environment, visit the ENERGY STAR website or contact your local energy provider.

Did you know a well-equipped kitchen is key to boosting efficiency and productivity? Beyond reach-ins and undercounters, prep tables are another essential piece of equipment that are often overlooked. These hidden gems help streamline your kitchen’s workflow and ensure food safety. According to Persistence Market Research, the global refrigerated prep table market is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.3%. This growth is expected to increase the market value of the global refrigerated prep tables market from $7.67 billion in 2024 to $10.30 billion by the end of 2031.

Let’s dive into why prep tables are a must-have in commercial kitchens.

1. Enhanced Efficiency and Organization:

Prep tables may not always be in the spotlight, but they’re essential for keeping your kitchen running smoothly. Acting as a central hub, they reduce clutter and streamline workflow. With features like adjustable shelves, built-in cutting boards, and under-table storage, prep tables provide flexibility for various tasks. Whether chopping vegetables or assembling dishes, they offer a dedicated space for every step of food prep.

2. Improved Food Safety:

Prep tables are more than just work surfaces; they’re essential for maintaining food safety and quality in your kitchen. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 600 million people—nearly 1 in 10 globally—suffer from foodborne illnesses each year due to contaminated food. By preventing cross-contamination and ensuring proper handling and storage, prep tables play a crucial role in safeguarding your food and keeping it safe and tasty.

3. Space Optimization:

If you’re short on space, prep tables can make a significant impact. They come in compact designs that fit perfectly in smaller kitchens and often include multi-functional features like built-in storage or refrigeration, maximizing your available space.

4. Versatility and Adaptability:

Prep tables are also incredibly versatile, fitting various kitchen layouts and needs. Whether you operate a cozy fast-casual restaurant or a large fine-dining venue, there’s a prep table designed for you.

You can choose from mobile prep tables with casters for easy movement or stationary models for a fixed setup. They range in size from compact undercounter units to spacious freestanding options, offering features like built-in sinks or refrigeration. This flexibility ensures you can find a prep table that matches your kitchen layout and meets your restaurant’s specific needs, whether for space efficiency or advanced functionality.

5. Durability and Longevity:

We genuinely believe that investing in a high-quality prep table is worthwhile in the long run. These durable tables are designed to withstand the fast pace of a commercial kitchen, providing reliable service for years. Their longevity means fewer repairs or replacements, saving you time and money. Additionally, they typically retain their value well, making them a smart investment for your business.

Hoshizaki America, a leading manufacturer of commercial ice and refrigeration equipment, has received a favorable initial determination in its patent infringement case against competitor Blue Air FSE LLC and its parent company, Bluenix Co., Ltd.

Key Developments

Ruling Details: After a week-long hearing, the Chief Administrative Law Judge at the International Trade Commission (ITC) found that Blue Air and Bluenix violated U.S. trade law by importing and selling ice machines that infringe three of Hoshizaki’s patents.

Patent Validity: The judge upheld the validity of Hoshizaki’s patents, rejecting Respondants’ arguments that Hoshizaki’s patents are invalid as not innovative.

Recommended Action: The judge has recommended that the ITC issue an order to prevent Blue Air and Bluenix from importing and selling the infringing products in the United States.

What’s Next

  1. The ITC is expected to make a final determination later this year.
  2. A related lawsuit is ongoing in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Company Response
Allan Dziwoki, Hoshizaki America’s President, expressed satisfaction with the initial ruling, stating, “Hoshizaki invests heavily in research and development of new and improved technology. Protecting that investment by enforcing our intellectual property rights is extremely important to us, and we will take whatever steps are necessary to do that.”

Background
The dispute centers around Hoshizaki’s patented crescent cuber evaporator design, which is used in ice-making systems. The company alleges that Blue Air and Bluenix’s BLMI and BLUI series ice machines infringe these patents. This case highlights the importance of intellectual property protection in the competitive commercial kitchen equipment industry.

The foodservice industry is being influenced by rapid advancements in technology. From how we order and pay, to how food is prepared and delivered, innovation is reshaping the dining experience. It’s no longer just about serving delicious food; it’s about creating a satisfying customer journey and an efficient kitchen with the aid of technology.

Staying ahead of the curve and embracing these technological advancements is important to the success of a foodservice business. Let’s dive into some of the latest advancements in foodservice technology and explore how it’s shaping the industry’s future.

Automation and Robotics

Robots are revolutionizing the foodservice industry by becoming everyday helpers in kitchens and restaurants. From flipping burgers to delivering food, automation is changing the game. With California’s passing of law AB 1228, effective April 1, 2024, the minimum wage for fast-food workers in CA is now $20/hr. This has caused, in turn, restaurant owners to look for ways to reduce costs in other sections of their operation. When I visited the National Restaurant Show in Chicago this year (read more in our previous blog), many booths featured robots designed to increase efficiency. Imagine having robot chefs preparing your meals with precision and speed. Not only can automation create efficiency, but some robots can help maintain consistent food quality that’s hard to match. Additionally, they work tirelessly without breaks, helping to reduce labor costs and increase productivity. It’s a win-win for both restaurant owners and customers.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

AI-powered analytics can provide valuable insights into customer preferences, helping restaurants optimize menus and create personalized dining experiences. Additionally, AI can be used for predictive maintenance, helping restaurants anticipate equipment failures and schedule repairs proactively. This prevents costly downtime and ensures a smooth operation. According to Precedence Research, the Food & Beverages AI market demand surged to $8 billion in 2023 and is forecasted to soar to approximately $214.62 billion by 2033. By analyzing vast amounts of data, businesses can identify trends, predict demand, and make data-driven decisions to improve profitability.

Smart Kitchen Equipment

Get ready for refrigerators that know when you’re running low on milk and ovens that can perfectly cook a steak consistently. Smart kitchen appliances offer increased convenience, efficiency, and precision, elevating the overall food prep experience.

As technology continues to advance, we can expect more sophisticated and connected kitchen devices to emerge, making kitchens more efficient, able to handle higher volumes, and meals more consistent. Last year, the global market for smart kitchen appliances reached a value of $15.68 billion. Analysts predict strong growth ahead, with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.3% from 2023 to 2030.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Technologies

One of the biggest challenges in the foodservice industry is food waste. Smart waste management systems can help restaurants track food waste, identify patterns, and implement strategies to minimize waste, which not only reduces costs, but also benefits the environment.

Energy efficiency is another key aspect of sustainability. From energy-efficient kitchen equipment to smart building management systems, restaurants are exploring various ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

A tenet of the Hoshizaki corporation is to develop original, energy-efficient products preferred by our customers while complying with laws and operating our facilities in an environmentally responsible manner as exemplified by our ISO 14001 certification, and our multiple ENERGY STAR® Awards. Hoshizaki offers over 140 ENERGY STAR® certified products, reflecting our commitment to both environmental responsibility and operational efficiency. So, not only do we make products that can contribute to a business’s LEED certification, but we also manufacture them in a way that is energy-efficient and conservation based. As consumer awareness and regulatory laws about sustainability grow, restaurants that prioritize eco-friendly practices are gaining a competitive edge.

Enhanced Customer Experience through Technology

Digital menus, self-service kiosks, and contactless payment options are becoming the norm, offering greater convenience and personalization.

Digital menus provide restaurants with the flexibility to update menus in real-time, highlight featured items, and even showcase nutritional information. Customers benefit from interactive menus that allow them to explore options at their own pace. Shinya Ramen in Chicago has seen a nearly 20% increase in their average tip percentage after implementing digital menus, as staff are now able to dedicate more time to engaging with customers.

Self-service kiosks streamline the ordering process, reducing wait times and empowering customers to customize their meals. Contactless payment options enhance convenience and safety, especially in a post-pandemic world.

Leveraging data and AI, restaurants can gather valuable insights into customer preferences and behavior. This information can be used to create personalized dining experiences, such as tailored recommendations and customized offers. By understanding their customers better, restaurants can build stronger relationships and drive loyalty.

Ultimately, the integration of technology into the dining experience aims to create a seamless and enjoyable journey for customers while optimizing operations for restaurant owners.

Trends in Food Delivery and Online Ordering

The food delivery landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. Advancements in technology have revolutionized how food is ordered, prepared, and delivered. From the moment a customer places an order to the time it arrives at their doorstep, technology is streamlining the entire process. According to a study conducted by the National Restaurant Association, two-thirds of adults reported they are more inclined to order takeout from restaurants now than they were before the pandemic.

AI and automation are playing a crucial role in optimizing food delivery operations. Intelligent routing algorithms help delivery drivers navigate efficiently, reducing delivery times and minimizing fuel consumption. Automated kitchens are emerging, capable of preparing meals with speed and precision, further enhancing the efficiency of the delivery process. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more innovative solutions to emerge in the food delivery industry. From drone delivery to hyper-local delivery services, the future of food delivery holds immense potential to reshape the way we consume our meals.

Closing Thoughts

The foodservice industry is undergoing a transformative shift, driven by rapid advancements in technology. Within the kitchen, robotics, smart kitchen equipment, and AI monitoring systems are changing the way kitchens operate. Front of house, digital menus, personalized ordering, and innovative delivery methods are changing the way diners experience their meal. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more groundbreaking solutions emerging in the foodservice industry. At Hoshizaki, we are committed to being a part of this journey, developing innovative products that lead the way and meet the needs of tomorrow’s foodservice landscape.

In today’s fast-paced world, food safety is more important than ever. But achieving food safety isn’t just about following a few basic rules. Commercial kitchens rely on a combination of proper equipment and diligent practices to maintain high hygiene standards. This includes everything from maintaining proper storage temperatures to using effective cleaning procedures.

At Hoshizaki America, we understand the critical role commercial refrigeration plays in food safety. We are dedicated to providing top-quality equipment that empowers you to confidently prepare and store food, ensuring a delicious and safe dining experience for everyone.

The Importance of Food Safety in the Foodservice Industry

For restaurants, cafes, and any business serving food, food safety isn’t just a recommendation; it’s a fundamental responsibility. Foodborne illnesses caused by contaminated food can cause a range of illnesses, from mild discomfort to life-threatening conditions. These illnesses can impact anyone, but young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk.

To safeguard consumers, government agencies enforce strict food safety regulations. These regulations outline specific requirements for food handling, storage, and preparation. Failure to comply can result in fines, business closures, and even legal repercussions.

Key Components of Food Safety

Hygiene Practices

Kitchen staff should wash their hands thoroughly and frequently, especially before and after handling food, using soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.

Develop a cleaning and sanitation routine that includes:

Regular Equipment Maintenance

Ignoring equipment maintenance can lead to several risks:

Establish a schedule for regular inspections of critical equipment like refrigerators and freezers, paying close attention to temperature control and functionality.

Also Remember…

Keeping food at the perfect temperature is key! Hot dishes need to stay steaming hot, at 140°F or even warmer. For cold items, think icy cold, 40°F or below.

Buffets are all about keeping things fresh. Use chafing dishes, slow cookers, or warming trays to keep hot food hot. For cold items, place serving dishes in bowls filled with ice. Here’s a tip: use smaller serving trays and replace them often to keep everything chilled.

No matter what, always use a food thermometer to double-check those temperatures!

And note, time is of the essence! Don’t leave any perishable food out at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or just 1 hour if it’s a super hot day).

Food Safety Compliance

FDA Food Code: Developed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Food Code sets national recommendations for safe food handling practices.

HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points): This science-based system helps identify and control potential hazards throughout the food chain, from purchasing ingredients to serving the final product. While not mandatory for all businesses, HACCP principles are often incorporated into food safety management systems.

Lastly, it’s important to know that many cities and states require food service professionals to be ServSafe certified – kind of like a driver’s license for your kitchen! Administered by the National Restaurant Association, ServSafe provides comprehensive training on food safety best practices. This certification covers critical topics such as proper food handling, sanitation, temperature control, and allergen management. Ensuring your staff is ServSafe certified not only helps you comply with local regulations but also enhances your kitchen’s safety standards, protecting both your customers and your business.

By prioritizing food safety, you cultivate a kitchen environment where both your staff and your customers can thrive. Implementing the practices outlined above – proper storage, hygiene protocols, regular equipment maintenance and food safety compliance – lays a strong foundation.

Hoshizaki America is committed to being your partner in food safety. Our reliable, high-quality commercial refrigeration and ice machines empower you to maintain safe food storage temperatures. Check out our catalog to learn more.

Together, we can ensure that every meal is not only delicious but also safe and healthy for everyone to enjoy.

Congratulations! You’ve taken the exciting leap and are on your way to opening your very own restaurant. From menu planning to interior design, there are a million things to think about. But one crucial element that often gets overshadowed is equipping your restaurant with the right tools for the job.

Resist the urge to fill your restaurant with every appliance under the sun. Invest in high-quality, reliable equipment that can handle the daily demands of a busy operation. This will save you money on repairs and replacements in the long run, and ensure your food prep runs smoothly.

Time is money, especially in the fast-paced world of restaurants. Choose equipment that helps you work smarter, not harder. Look for features like fast preheat times for ovens, or appliances with multiple functions to save on counter space. Do a little research on brands known for building commercial-grade machinery that can withstand the heat (literally) of the kitchen.

A safe kitchen is a happy (and healthy) kitchen. Make sure all your equipment meets safety regulations and comes with the proper certifications.

Equipping Your Space

Now, let’s talk specifics!

Ovens, Ranges, Deep Fryers, and Grills are essential for your kitchen, allowing you to sear, bake, fry, and grill all your menu favorites.

Food Processors and Mixers tackle repetitive chopping, mixing, and blending tasks, saving you valuable prep time.

Ventilation Hoods play a crucial role in maintaining a comfortable and safe kitchen environment by removing smoke, heat, and cooking odors.

Refrigeration, this is the heart of your kitchen! You’ll need reliable refrigerators and freezers to keep your ingredients fresh and safe. At Hoshizaki America, we offer a fantastic range of commercial refrigerators and freezers designed for efficiency, durability, and top-notch food safety.

Hoshizaki Steelheart® refrigerators and freezers are a star in any kitchen. They’re built tough, with a stainless steel interior and exterior that can handle the daily grind. No matter how busy things get, these refrigerators will keep your food safe and chilled at the perfect temperature.

Our undercounter and worktop refrigerators and freezers are designed to maximize space without sacrificing performance. They’re perfect for tucking away in prep areas, behind bars, or anywhere you need quick access to chilled or frozen items.

Hoshizaki prep tables are built for efficiency and organization. They can handle even your deepest pans, and come with handy divider bars and removable cutting boards to keep your workspace tidy. Mega Top refrigerators offer extra space on top for ingredients, making the most of your storage capacity. Ideal for busy restaurants, allowing chefs to prep food quickly and keep everything within easy reach.

Hoshizaki Pizza Prep Tables are a game-changer for any pizzeria. They distribute air evenly throughout the entire unit, so even during peak hours, your ingredients stay perfectly chilled delivering consistent quality pizzas, crust to crust. Now imagine a world where heat from the stove doesn’t affect the freshness of your ingredients. Hoshizaki’s refrigerated chef bases make it a reality! With a built-in ceramic heat shield, these innovative units protect your food from heat exposure, keeping everything cool and safe even in the most intense kitchen environments.

Hoshizaki Glass Door Merchandisers are perfect for showcasing your grab-and-go offerings. These stylish units come in a variety of sizes, features and colors to suit any restaurant’s needs. With clear visibility and attractive displays, they’ll entice customers and boost your sales. Additionally, Hoshizaki’s Back Bar Refrigerators, Direct Draw Refrigerators, and Bottle Coolers are lifesavers for cramped bar areas. They’re designed for tight spaces, with front breathing and side-mounted refrigeration that requires zero clearance. This means easy access to beverages and efficient cooling, all without sacrificing that sleek, professional look. So you can prioritize both style and functionality in your bar setup.

We also believe that Sushi Cases are the secret weapon of any restaurant that serves Sushi. Hoshizaki Sushi Cases feature a sleek stainless steel interior and bright LED lights, creating the perfect stage for showcasing your delicious sushi creations. But they’re not just about good looks! Hoshizaki cases also have a powerful, specially-plated evaporator on top to keep your sushi chilled to perfection. This means your customers get the freshest sushi possible, while you can rest assured it’s stored in ideal conditions. Check out our brochure to know more about our refrigeration products.

Heated cabinets, on the other hand, are an excellent addition too. For restaurants specializing in take-out or delivery, these unsung heroes are a game-changer. Hoshizaki America also offers heated cabinet solutions that maintain food safety and quality while keeping your take-out orders piping hot and delicious.

Dishwashers are the silent warriors behind the scenes, tackling mountains of dirty dishes efficiently. A dedicated three-compartment sink ensures proper hygiene for washing, rinsing, and sanitizing dishes by hand. For optimal results, consider equipment from Jackson Warewashing Systems, part of the Hoshizaki Alliance, known for its reliability and performance.

Ice Machines keep beverages icy cold and are an essential investment for any restaurant. Hoshizaki America offers a range of high-efficiency ice machines that produce clear, hard, and clean ice, with each machine guaranteed to last for years.

The MVP of all ice machines, KMEdge™ Crescent Cuber Ice Machines are our champions! They are built tough with a stainless steel exterior and a double-sided evaporator, so you know they will be maximizing ice production for years to come. They are designed to fit perfectly into your kitchen and can handle even the busiest rush, ensuring your drinks are always served with fresh, clear ice cubes. Hoshizaki offers cubelet ice machines as well! Cubelet ice is the perfect middle ground – it’s hard enough to hold its shape but soft enough to soak up all the flavor of your drink. This makes it ideal for specialty cocktails, smoothies, and soft drinks. Additionally, restaurants are loud. Your ice machine doesn’t have to be. Our Serenity Series reduces noise, stays cooler, and is more compact than other cubers.

Our flaker machines are rockstars for all sorts of restaurants, from sushi bars to cocktail lounges. They produce a steady stream of flaky ice, perfect for chilling drinks and showcasing your food beautifully. We offer a range of sizes, from undercounter models with built-in bins to powerhouse machines that can produce up to 1800 lbs. of ice a day!

Running a bar? Hoshizaki’s Specialty Ice Machines are your new best friends. They come in 2by2 cubes, 1by1 cubes, and even spheres! These machines fit neatly under your bar counter and eliminate the need for messy ice molds or costly outside suppliers. Plus, with perfect ice, you can create show-stopping cocktails that will have your customers coming back for more. Hoshizaki’s Top Hat Ice Machines create gourmet cubes resembling top hats. They melt slower than regular ice, so your drinks stay colder, longer, and without getting watered down and are the perfect way to elevate your outdoor bar or restaurant experience, ensuring happy customers and picture-perfect drinks.

We also offer Ice and Water Dispensers in various sizes to fit any restaurant, from cozy bistros to large dining halls. They ensure you always have a steady supply of fresh ice on hand, keeping your kitchen and bar running smoothly during peak hours. They are also ideal for serving customers directly or for self-service by customers themselves. Check out our brochure to know more about our Ice Machines.

And lastly, fire safety equipment is essential for the well-being of your staff and customers.

Remember: This is a general list, and your specific needs will depend on your restaurant’s type of cuisine and menu. For example, a pizzeria will require a powerful pizza oven different from a high-end steakhouse. However, having a well-rounded understanding of essential equipment will put you on the right track.

By investing in the right commercial equipment, you’ll be well on your way to a successful and efficient restaurant operation! So, do your research, choose wisely, and with a well-equipped kitchen, you’ll be serving up culinary delights in no time!

The secret to a successful summer for any bar or restaurant? Keeping your customers’ drinks refreshingly cold without affecting the flavor. But how can you ensure a steady stream of perfectly chilled beverages, even on the busiest days?

Regular ice just doesn’t cut it—it melts fast, watering drinks down, and leaving your customers unsatisfied.

Today, we’re diving into how to keep summer drinks perfectly refreshing all season long with Hoshizaki’s range of eight types of ice.

Sure, Hoshizaki America is a name synonymous with top-of-the-line ice machines. But what sets our machines apart from the rest? Hoshizaki Ice Machines maximize efficiency without compromising quality. We believe in the power of ice. Ice is more than just a way to cool down drinks and we understand that the right ice type can significantly impact your business operations.

We offer clear, hard, and clean ice from machines guaranteed to last for years. Versatile for any operation, our ice machines are perfect for restaurants and bars, convenience stores, hospitality venues, supermarkets, schools and universities, healthcare centers and more.

Hoshizaki Cubelet ice might be small, but it packs a serious punch! No more lukewarm sodas or watered down cocktails frustrating your customers. Plus, it is super chewable! Perfect for those who like to munch on their ice while they sip. It’s a hit everywhere, from restaurants and schools to hospitals and hotels. Hoshizaki even offers Cubelet ice in three different sizes – mini, small, and medium – so you have the perfect nugget for any purpose.

Hoshizaki 1by1 Cube ice is the champion of crystal-clear cubes. These solid 1-inch by 1-inch squares are a game-changer, elevating the look and taste of any drink. If you’re tired of chipped or uneven ice cubes that water down your beverage, Hoshizaki 1by1 Cubes are the answer. Their slow-melting design ensures your drinks stay refreshingly cold, sip after delicious sip. This type of ice is commonly found in restaurants, bars and hotels all around the world.

Sometimes, a regular ice cube just doesn’t cut it. That’s where the Hoshizaki 2by2 Cube swoops in to save the day. These aren’t your average cubes – they’re super-sized 2-inch by 2-inch squares, perfect for those who like their drinks seriously chilled and long-lasting. These giants are popular choices in restaurants and bars because they slow down the melting process, keeping your beverages icy cold for longer. Plus, they add a striking visual element to any drink, impressing customers with their size and enhancing the overall drinking experience.

Hoshizaki Sphere Ice, flawlessly round, 1.8-inch ice spheres are designed to be the perfect fit for your glasses. Their smooth surface melts slowly, ensuring your drinks stay refreshingly cold without dilution. No more ruining the presentation! Hoshizaki Sphere Ice takes your cocktails from good to great, making them a favorite in high-end restaurants, hotels, and bars.

Now, don’t let the flaky name fool you! Hoshizaki Flaked Ice offers a unique texture and function, making it a valuable asset in various applications. These soft, moldable flakes conform easily to any shape, providing efficient cooling in a variety of settings. Food and seafood displays benefit greatly from this ice, as it gently surrounds and cools the products, keeping them fresh and visually appealing. Plus, the flakes melt quickly, ensuring a fast cooling effect that maintains optimal temperatures and presentation quality.

Not all ice cubes are created equal. Hoshizaki Top Hat Ice brings a touch of distinction to your beverages. These individual, crystal-clear cylinders resembling tiny top hats stand out from the crowd. Crafted with hard, slow-melting ice, they keep your beverages refreshingly cold without diluting the flavor – perfect for those who appreciate a premium sipping experience. Popular in high-end restaurants, bars, and even home entertaining, Hoshizaki Top Hat ice makes a statement in every glass.

Hoshizaki Soft Cubelet Ice lives up to its name – it’s soft! These tiny, pellet-shaped nuggets are like little pillows of cool refreshment, perfect for those who enjoy a bit of chew with their sip. Their unique, soft texture is gentle on teeth and incredibly satisfying.  Don’t underestimate their chilling power, though! They keep drinks refreshingly cold without dilution, making them a favorite in restaurants and convenience stores.

Saved the best-selling for last! Hoshizaki KMEdge Crescent Ice, also known as the Half Moon ice. These unique, crescent-shaped wonders are our most popular for a reason. They’re not just easy on the eyes – the increased surface area chills drinks faster and slower-melting than standard cubes, keeping everything refreshingly cold without watering down the flavor. Popular in restaurants, bars, hotels, schools, and even convenience stores, Hoshizaki KMEdge Crescent Ice is available in a variety of models to suit your needs.

Ice isn’t just ice – it’s an essential ingredient in a perfect beverage experience. Hoshizaki America understands the science of crafting the ideal chill. Our filtered ice machines create a variety of options, from slow-melting cubes for premium drinks to refreshing, chewable nuggets. Upgrade your office, restaurant, or hotel with a Hoshizaki ice solution and discover how the perfect ice can elevate every sip. Hey everyone, today, I want to take you on a journey with me – to the National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show, the biggest foodservice show of the year, held annually in Chicago!

This year, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the NRA Show for the very first time. As a newbie Product Marketing Specialist at Hoshizaki, fresh out of my second month, let me tell you, I was buzzing with excitement! My colleagues had hyped it up so much, and from what I heard, the show floor itself is the size of like, 12 football fields!

The adventure began even before the show. I landed in Chicago on a Friday night, and having lived in New York for about two years, I was used to the urban feel, but Chicago felt different – cleaner, fresher, and with this amazing energy. The weather was perfect, too (not always a guarantee in Chicago!), and my hotel room had a killer view of the skyscrapers. I spent a good chunk of time just gazing out the window, even though I was exhausted from the trip.

Day 1 at the Show
Day 1 of the NRA Show finally arrived! Filled with breakfast and excitement, I hopped on the shuttle and headed to the convention center. The drive through Chicago was awesome, giving me glimpses of landmarks like the Riverwalk and Grant Park (mentally added those to my “must-visit” list!).

McCormick Place, where the event was held, was massive. Finding the Hoshizaki Alliance booth felt like a quest, but with a little help from friendly volunteers, I arrived at our beautifully designed space. It had cool lighting, perfectly showcasing products from all the companies that are a part of Hoshizaki Alliance: Hoshizaki America, Fogel Refrigeration, Jackson Warewashing Systems, Lancer Worldwide, and Macom. There was even a bar set up with live bartender demos – something my manager and I were particularly excited about (content creation time!).

Seeing Hoshizaki’s products up close was a game-changer. It gave me a whole new appreciation for their size and design. The live bartender demos were a huge hit! Chris, our superstar bartender (with almost 400k followers on Instagram – check him out at @notjustabartender!), used Hoshizaki ice to create some killer cocktails, and then showcased how Jackson’s dishwasher cleaned the fancy glassware in a flash.

Content Creation & Food Exploration
After getting familiar with the booth, I grabbed my gimbal and dove headfirst into the bustling show floor. My mission? To capture all the cool stuff happening without interrupting any important conversations. Throughout the day, I shared these clips with my manager for feedback and planned upcoming social media posts.

Lunchtime came and went (thanks to free samples!), but the adventure continued. I explored other booths, from big names like Coca-Cola to unique Asian food vendors. There were even robot waiters, robot dishwashers, you name it! The food scene was insane, with endless samples of pizza, ice cream, donuts, macarons, cheesecakes, and even jalapeño poppers (my stomach is still happy!).

Networking
Another big part of the NRA Show was networking. I met tons of interesting people, from young professionals just starting out to seasoned veterans of the industry. We chatted about our roles, exchanged ideas, and made some valuable connections. After the show floor closed, a teammate and I stuck around to capture some final booth content in the peaceful quiet.

We decided to avoid rush hour by walking back to the hotel, taking in the stunning Chicago evening scene. After freshening up, I ventured out solo to explore some tourist spots, take some pics, and meet up with an old friend. It was the perfect first day, blending work, exploration, and new experiences seamlessly.

Day 2 at the Show
Day 2 started the same way – straight to the Hoshizaki booth, which was even busier than the day before! More content creation, more Instagram stories, and this time, I even joined some booth tours. Talking to the Hoshizaki Alliance team gave me a ton of insights into our products, who our customers are, and the challenges they face.

The rest of the day was a whirlwind of exploring the other side of the show floor, more food samples (who can resist?) and even attending a live session with celebrity chef Elle Simon! She demoed her garnishing and plating skills by creating a burger that looked like a work of art – super informative and fun to watch.

By the end of the day, I was buzzing with information after chatting with colleagues and attendees. To wrap it up, we headed to a special Hoshizaki-hosted evening event at a popular Chicago spot, Kaiser Tiger. It was a fantastic chance to meet our customers, hear about their experiences with Hoshizaki products, and connect with company executives in a more relaxed setting. After introductions and learning more about everyone’s roles, we called it a night around 10 PM, ready for my flight home in the morning. I could only attend the event for the weekend, while some of my team stayed back as the show continued for the next two days.

Reflections & Recommendations
As I waited in the (crazy long) security line at the airport, I had a chance to reflect on this incredible trip. Chicago is definitely a city I’d love to visit again – warm in the summer, beautiful, clean, and with friendly people everywhere.

The NRA Show itself was an eye-opening experience, especially for a first-timer like me. I learned about so many brands, their histories, and innovative solutions I never knew existed. Everyone I met at the booths was friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even more memorable. And let’s not forget the food – mind-blowing. I had no idea the foodservice industry was this massive and constantly evolving.

From a Hoshizaki America perspective, it was clear we’re a major player in this game. Hearing how much people love our products and rely on their reliability filled me with pride. Our live bartender demos were a hit, generating tons of interest and positive feedback. Seeing our products in action, especially how the ice machines and Jackson’s dishwashers worked together seamlessly during the live demos, was really cool. It wasn’t just about showing off our equipment; it was about demonstrating the practical benefits they bring in real-world applications.

This experience totally changed my perspective on the foodservice industry. I now have a much broader understanding of the impact our products have and where the industry is headed.

The Final Bite
I came back from the NRA Show with a huge bag of knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the foodservice industry. If you’re even remotely connected to the industry, the NRA Show is a must-do. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn about new technologies, industry trends, and, of course, discover all sorts of delicious food. Be sure to check out our social media channels for all the pictures from the event!

Driven by need and opportunity, our industry is reinventing itself daily, pushing operators to look for ways to enhance kitchen efficiency and productivity throughout the day. Hoshizaki’s new refrigerated Pizza Prep models do just that, designed with four new key features to combat current restaurant owners’ difficulties.

Already the recipient of the 2022 Kitchen Innovations Award, these eleven new models – including two new 60-inch options – have been redesigned with value engineered technology that keeps products at ideal temperatures while requiring less labor and maintenance. Technologies like night/day mode can help lower costs and energy consumption and make operations even more sustainable. “The team has done a fantastic job,” said Kris Miller, VP of Engineering, “working together to streamline manufacturing processes along with incorporating new technologies to bring more value to our customers.”

New features include:

  • Night/day mode – when the lid is open, the set point drops to keep food cool in the rail. When the lid is closed, the set point returns to normal so food can stay in the rail overnight without freezing – saving labor costs of removing food from the rail each night and back in the morning.
  • One-piece pan rail design – protects the cabinet and is easy to clean.
  • Dual controller with single refrigeration system – for separate temperature controls for both the rail and cabinet; adjustable for every operation.
  • Optimal airflow in rail – back to front airflow through louvered ducts directs cold air around each pan, both 4” and 6” in any configuration, for consistent, precise cooling for all food products from cheese, greens, produce, sauces, etc.
  • Removable air filter – for easy cleaning and better operation.

Models are available now in 46-inch and 60-inch options. 67-inch and 93-inch sizes will be available in Q3 2022. Learn more at hoshizakiamerica.com/pizza-prep.

“Hoshizaki is excited to further expand our Steelheart series by adding pass-thru models which include features such as ducted airflow, stainless steel interior, and energy efficient R290 refrigerant,” explained Jake Kimmel, Refrigeration Product Manager for Hoshizaki America.

The 55-inch wide two section refrigerators hold an impressive 52.2 cubic feet of food, have the same door options as the single sections, and are made to order.

  • Sturdy 8-gauge stainless steel hinge door plates with welded pins provide a door with self-closing design with stay open feature
  • Three (3) adjustable epoxy coated wire shelves per section

Door hinging can be reversed, quickly and easily in the field, no kit required. Undercounter KM Icemaker Announcment

Hoshizaki America, Inc. transferred manufacturing of the IM-500SAB stackable and the IM-200BAC self-contained square cube ice machines from Europe to their facility in Peachtree City, Georgia.

“The demand for specialty ice shapes is just starting to take off in the Americas, but already exists in Europe.” Explains Jon O’Hern, Hoshizaki’s Director of New Product Development. “It’s a trend we’ve seen growing and with this move Hoshizaki America becomes the premier manufacturer of specialty ice machines in the western hemisphere.”

In early 2014, Hoshizaki introduced the IM-500BAA to the US market. The IM-500SAB remains largely unchanged. The 44-inch wide air-cooled unit produces up to 489 lbs. of individual 1” square ice cubes daily. The stackable head design allows operators to scale their operation by stacking up to two more head units to produce 1,460 lbs. of ice within the same footprint. This is a popular unit for medium to large operations where it would be installed in the back of the house and ice shuttled to the bar(s) and serving areas.

Due to the popularity and demand for large square cubes, Hoshizaki developed a smaller undercounter square cuber with a space saving self-contained bin. The IM-200BAA, and newest IM-200BAC produces 188 lbs. of square cubes daily and holds 75 lbs. in the built-in bin.

Both icemaker exteriors are constructed of stainless steel making them durable and easy to clean. Hoshizaki America also warranties the entire machine parts and labor for three years and the compressor for 5 years.

Hoshizaki America, Inc. KMEdge Ice Machine Series Receives a National Restaurant Association® 2018 Kitchen Innovations® (KI) Award

This prestigious foodservice industry award recognizes innovative new equipment that delivers advances in temperature control, food safety and more.

February 22, 2018 (Peachtree City, GA) – Hoshizaki America, Inc. is proud to announce that it received the 2018 Kitchen Innovations (KI) Award for progressive equipment that increases efficiencies and productivity for back-of-the-house operations and benefits restaurant operators. Hoshizaki’s KMEdge ice machine series will be showcased in the interactive Kitchen Innovations Showroom at the 2018 National Restaurant Association Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show®, to be held May 19-22 in Chicago at McCormick Place.

The KMEdge energy efficient design begins at the heart of the icemaker – the evaporator. KMEdge models employ a one-piece, dual-sided stainless steel evaporator that surrounds oval-shaped copper heating/cooling tubing, optimizing surface contact area for better hold/cold transfer. The result is harder, clearer ice and higher ice production in fewer cycles, increasing ice machine reliability.

The new control board incorporates custom programming that self-diagnoses any irregularity in freeze times due to the most common field issues (low water pressure, bin control malfunction, and cold incoming water.) If an irregularity is detected, the ice machine will automatically initiate a 10 minute defrost/melt cycle. If more than 3 freeze-ups in 36 hours are detected, the machine will prompt service needed via LED blinking light.

Griffin, GA (December 13, 2017) – Employees of Hoshizaki America, Inc. donated 11,327 pounds of food to the Five Loaves and Two Fish Food Pantry. The 220 employees in the Griffin Hoshizaki facility collected the food throughout November.

“We donated 7,000 pounds last year and we wanted to escalate our efforts and go above and beyond this year,” said Director of Griffin Plant Operations Rick Bassan. Hoshazaki also donated $2,000 to the food pantry.
“We feel as good corporate citizens that we need to give back to the community we work in and give to people in need,” said Bassan. “We are glad to support the food pantry.”

Five Loaves and Two Fish Executive Director Steve Traywick accepts $2,000 gift from Hoshizaki Director of Griffin Plant Operations Rick Bassan

A group of Hoshizaki employees came to help unload the food and were taken on a tour of the pantry operation by Executive Director Steve Traywick.

“Hoshizaki and their employees are outstanding partners in helping Five Loaves and Two Fish Food Pantry meet the mission of providing food to the working poor of our community,” said Traywick. “Their spirit of giving goes far beyond the holiday season. Their donation means that more families will receive more food. Words truly cannot express our gratitude.”

Five Loaves and Two Fish Food Pantry is the fourth-largest food pantry in the state due to the amount it distributes to families throughout the year.

“In November, 1937 households received food,” said Traywick. “We distributed 47,000 pounds of food and 516 turkeys.”

Spalding County receives the most with 86 percent going to local families and the rest going to families in surrounding counties.

Traywick explained to the Hoshizaki employees what type of donations work best —“peanut butter, canned meat products, rice, cereals, pasta, dry beans. These donations provide much needed protein for families in need.

He also noted that the items need to be in date. The pantry can give out items up to one year from the date stamped on the item. Items that are needed but rarely donated are diapers, small personal containers of hygiene items, feminine hygiene products, and small reusable bags. A large item on their wish list is portable lift system needed to lift the pallets of food up to floor level to unload. Another wish list item Traywick noted was the need for a printer. A Hoshizaki employee said he had one and would gladly donate it.

“I am encouraged by your corporate social responsibility,” said Traywick to the Hoshizaki employees. “Kudos to you for giving back to this community.”

The community can help Five Loaves and Two Fish by donating money and items as well as volunteering time. Many volunteers are overseen by Martha Richards, food pantry warehouse manager. “She is the key to making the whole operation successful,” says Traywick.

For more information on Five Loaves and Two Fish Food Pantry, call 678-603-1238. The pantry is at 412 West Slaton Ave., Griffin, GA 30223 and the hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; and 5 to 6 p.m.; and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“Viewers are used to seeing how mega machines like airplanes and trains are built, but just as brilliantly designed are the unsung heroes of the modern world- lawnmowers, chainsaws and even the household blender employ complex mechanical ingenuity that we use all the time without a thought as to how they work so well,” said Neil Laird, Executive Producer of MACHINES: HOW THEY WORK. “This show is a celebration of those unseen innovators of the everyday.”
